Today at Parliament
Kosovo in Lebanon’s agenda.
The Speaker of Parliament met in Beirut with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati. It was the fist time the Speaker of Parliament met the prime minister of this country.
Albania and Lebanon take part in many international organizations, among which the Mediterranean Union. They are both Mediterranean countries, they are both small countries that want to increase political, economic, cultural and financial cooperation of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Mikati promised to sign as soon as possible the five main agreements between Albania and Lebanon.
The Speaker of Parliament, Jozefina Topalli, conveyed Prime Minister Mikati the invitation of the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha to visit Tirana.
The Prime Minister promised to visit Tirana soon and to sign some agreements, accompanied by a group of businessmen of different sectors.
The main topic of discussion in this meeting was the request of the Speaker of Parliament to recognize Kosovo’s independence. She said that Kosovo’s case is “sui generis”, that borders are unchangeable, that we support the integrity of Kosovo’s territory and that 87 countries have already recognized Kosovo.
Now it is time for Lebanon to become the 88-th country to recognize Kosovo’s independence, like many other countries; the gulf countries and the Arab League have recognized this irreversible reality, after the recognition made by the USA, the majority of EU member countries, Canada and Japan.
Prime Minister Mikati promised to consider this issue seriously. The conversation continued beyond the scheduled time, due to the interest he showed for Albania, its economic development and the potentials it offers.
The meeting with Prime Minister Mikati, like the one with the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Berri, was assessed as a very important mile stone to transform the relations between both Mediterranean countries.
